Choosing Countertops: Quartz and Granite

Choosing Countertops: Quartz vs. Granite

When it comes to a choosing countertops for a kitchen remodeling project, one question we are consistently asked is “What are the differences between quartz countertops and granite countertops?”  Let me start off by saying this: when choosing countertop materials, it comes down to what’s best for your kitchen design, your lifestyle and your budget.

Quartz

Quartz is considered an engineered stone and is manufactured using various quartz crystals, resins and pigments. The ratio is 93% quartz to 7% resin.

Quartz Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Quartz countertops are stronger and more flexible than granite.
  • Quartz countertops are non-porous, so they won’t ever require sealing or polishing.
  • Quartz is a very hard material, and is resistant to scratches.

Cons:

  • Quartz may fade or change color over time if it is directly exposed to sunlight.

Granite

Granite is a 100% natural stone which is quarried from the earth. The large blocks of granite are then sliced into slabs which are polished and fabricated.

Granite Pros and Cons

Pros:

  • Granite is 100% natural, which makes it very popular among homeowners
  • Since granite is naturally created in the earth, each piece has its own unique pattern and colors.
  • Granite is very durable.  It can withstand high heat and can be cleaned easily.  If treated properly, it will last you a lifetime.

Cons:

  • Granite countertops need to be sealed (recommended every 2 years). Lighter colored granites need to be sealed more frequently than darker colors. However, the process of sealing is as easy as spraying the sealer on your countertops and wiping it off.
  • Granite is not completely indestructible, and it may crack if you hit it hard with a sharp object.  However, this is unlikely to happen with normal use.

Quartz and granite are both very durable and beautiful options for kitchen countertops.  It is important to work with your designer in choosing the countertop that fits best your overall design and budget.
